What’s this strategic business?

No matter where I go or what I do, one thing always pops up in creative briefs and tasks: strategy. Of course it does. Without strategy our work wouldn’t really do much. We have to have a goal. We need to know what we want to do with our work.

This isn’t some mumbo jumbo to mean I’m special and unique and wonderful (though I am, you can ask my Dad). By calling myself a strategic copywriter I am reminding myself to write with purpose. To have a reason for everything. To make every letter and punctuation mark count.

Not only do I write strategically, but I also write, well, strategies. I’ve written social plans and worked on new business pitches. I’ve also written a personal strategy to make sure I stay on track with my life goals. Basically, I’m telling you I’m a nerd. And proud to be one.

Some strategic things I’ve learn over the years:

  • Choose exclamation points carefully. Even if they’re really fun!

  • First person > third person

  • Sometimes an emoji can really accentuate the copy 💁‍♀️

  • Pick your battles

  • A well placed ellipses can really add some mystery to things…

  • If you feel passionately about something, go ahead and write that 5 paragraph email. Just know that it might not get read.

  • Nouns can be verbs

  • Some hashtags lead to gross things, check before using!
